S.C.R.A. (Special Class Railway Apprentice)

The SCRA scheme was started in 1927 by the Britishers to manage the Indian Railways network. It is one of the most prestigious and competitive examination in India.On completion of their Engineering and Training they are appointed as assistant mechanical engineers in a division. Future promotions are the same as in other branches.

  • SCRA 2010 - Notification on 28th August 2010
  • For the last several years SCRA was conducted alternate years and exam was normally in month of July. SCRA was conducted in 2009 and would be conducted in December 2010 also. Highly unexpected change in the schedule. In earlier format when exam was conducted in July, it leads to loss of one year of the successful candidates.

  • Age Eligibility: Not less than 17 years and not more than 21 years on 1st Aug 2010. Upper age limited relaxable for SC. ST, OBC and other certain categroies
  • Educational Qualification: Must have passed in the first or second division, the intermediate or an equivalent exam approved by the GoI with Mathematics and atleast one of the ubjects Physics and Chemistry as subjects of the examination.

  • SCRA was not conducted in 2008 and 2006. Last time it was conducted in 2007 and in 2009.
  • SCRA 2007: Total seats: 25. Exam in July 2007, Result Declared in Nov 07, Interview in Jan 08 and Final result in Feb 08.
  • It is our observation that the students who qualifies SCRA, are the students studying (first year) in DCE, NIT's, IIIT's, Jamia, preparing for IIT JEE, Local colleges and not that of IIT's.

  • Examination Notice No: 12/2010-SCRA , dated 28/08/2010
  • FIll the form using HB pencil (circles) and Blue or black pen (boxes)
  • Fee is payable only in the form of single Central Recruitment Fee Stamp. Obtain only one single CRF Stamp of Rs. 50/- denomination from the post office and paste it firmly within the box. After pasting the CRF Stamp on the form, get it cancelled from the post office of purchase in the space provided. Do not staple the CRF Stamp.
  • Candidates belonging to OBCs but comming in the Creamy Layer and thus not being entitled to OBC reservation should indicate their community as "General Category Code No. 4".
  • Name of the student in the form: For filling up this column, first write in the boxes your full name (in English) in capital letters exactly as recorded in your Matriculation/High School/Secondary or equivalent examination certificate. Write a single letter in a box. Leave a box blank between any two parts of the name. Then darken the corresponding circle below each letter. Do not darken a circle below a blank box. . Abbreviate name only if necessary. Do not use any prefix such as shri, Km., Dr. etc. with your name.

  • Course and Examination pattern of SCRA:
    The course content for this examination is of the intermediate level.
    Paper is conducted in 2 parts:
    1. Part 1
    a. Paper 1 General Ability Test ( English, GK , Psychological test - 200 Marks)
    b. Paper 2 Physical Science (Physics and Chemistry, 200 Marks)
    c. Paper 3 (Mathematics 200 Marks)

    2. Part 2: Personality Test: 200 Marks


    • Eligibility for SCRA : Intermediate with Mathematics and at least one subject as Physics or Chemistry.
    • Age requirement: 17-21 years as on 1st August (normally). The selected candidates are called for an interview, which is followed by a medical examination. The standard of syllabus is that of Class XII (CBSE equivalent).
    • The exam is conducted once every two years with few exceptions in the past. This year is also an exception with the exam planned in December while before that exam was in month of July. The last SCRA exam were conducted in 2007 and 2009. Unexpectedly SCRA would be conducted in 2010 as well but exam is December (used to be July).

    • Students - SCRA Selected
    • The selected candidates undergo a four-year training programme in Mechanical Engineering, for which the Institute has a Memorandum of Understanding with BIT, Mesra, Ranchi.
    • The apprentices get a stipend, Dearness Allowance, medical benefits, privelege passes etc.
    • After completion of four years of training, the candidates join as Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) Officers in Indian Railways.
