Q1: I am a class XII science student, what course can I apply for at IISERs?

Ans: Five year BS-MS dual degree programme.

Q2: How do I get admission to the BS-MS dual degree program in IISERs?

[Abbreviations Used: GE: General Category, OBC: Other Backward Class, SC: Scheduled Caste, ST: Scheduled Tribe, KM: Kashmiri Migrants, PD: Physically Disabled, NL: Non creamy Layer]

Students will be admitted to the Five Year BS-MS Dual Degree programme beginning August 2015 through the following channels

  • Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Basic Science Stream: Students qualifying in SA (2013)/SX (2014)/SB (2014)
  • Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced 2015): Students obtaining a minimum of 60% marks in class XII and securing a place in the Rank List of Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced 2015) for the admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), for details See JEE(Advanced) Cut-off.
  • State and Central Boards: Students passed class XII in 2014 or appearing in 2015 in science stream with either
    1. Marks above or equal to the cut-off percentage declared by DST (http://www.inspire-dst.gov.in) as eligibility for INSPIRE fellowship 2015. For OBC (Non-Creamy layer)/PD category candidates, there is a 5% relaxation in the DST cut-off. The cut-off for SC/ST candidates and Kashmiri Migrants(KM) is 55% in class XII for all boards
    2. OR

    3. Advisory note for the eligibility for Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) under INSPIRE scheme based only on the performance in class XII board examination

Students applying through State and Central Boards channel will be required to appear and qualify the IISER Aptitude Test.

(*) Aggregate marks = (Total marks obtained in all subjects x 100) / Maximum marks.

Q3: Do I need to apply separately for different IISERs?

No. All IISERs admit students through a common application process. One application form is valid for all IISERs.

Q4: How many seats are available for the admission to the BS-MS dual degree programme in 2015 ?

Total available seats is 1000 for all IISERs put together.

Q5: What is the intake through different channels?

  • Up to 50% seats (General/SC/ST/OBC Non-creamy) for KVPY and JEE (Advanced 2015) channel.
  • Remaining seats through State and Central Boards channel based on an Aptitude Test conducted by IISERs. This means that the unfilled seats of the KVPY and JEE(Advanced) channels will be filled through the SCB channel.

Q6: What are the Cut-off ranks/marks for these channels?

IISER does not impose any rank Cut-off. Top applicants from KVPY and JEE channels are offered admission, That is 50% seats from KVPY and JEE (Advanced 2015) channels. Remaining seats are filled up according to the performance in the aptitude test in the SCB stream.

Q7: Can I apply through more than one channel (i.e through kvpy, IIT advanced and Aptitude Test)?

Yes.

Q8: Do I need to apply separately for each channel?

You may apply to IISERs through multiple channels provided you meet the eligibility criteria for each of the channels you want to apply through. It requires separate application and payment of application fee for each channel.

Q9: Does reservation of seats apply for admission?

Yes, as per Government of India rules.

Q10: How do I apply?

Application has to be done online only at our admission portal . The details of the application procedure will be announced on this website in due course.

Q11: When should I apply?

Please refer to Q20 for details.

Q12: Is there an application fee?

There is a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 1500/- (Rs. 750/- for candidates applying under SC/ST category and Kashmiri Migrants)

Q13: Is there any financial support for students admitted at IISERs?

Yes. BS-MS students are eligible for a monthly scholarship of Rs. 5000/- awarded as per the norms of KVPY/INSPIRE scheme. The continuation of the scholarship depends on the academic performance.

Q14: What is the fee structure for BS-MS programme at IISERs?

The information regarding the fee structure of individual IISERs is available at the websites of respective IISERs.

Q15: Can I be a day-scholar at IISERs?

No. IISERs are fully residential campuses and students are required to stay in campus hostels.

Q16: Are all candidates satisfying the eligibility criteria admitted to IISERs?

No. Admission to IISERs is based on the total number of available seats as per

  1. Ranking in KVPY.
  2. Ranking in JEE (Advanced 2015). (Upto 10000 rank in case of General Category,
    JEE(Advanced) 2015 Cut-off
    GE Category Upto 10000th Rank in CRL (Common Rank List) as per DST norms.
    SC/ST Category All JEE Advanced 2015 qualified
    OBC NCL Category Upto 10000th Rank in CRL (Common Rank List) as per DST norms.
    PwD All Categories All JEE Advanced 2015 qualified
  3. Merit in the Aptitude test for the SCB stream conducted by IISERs.

Q17: How do I make my choice of IISER?

You will be asked to give your preferences in the online application form. The details of the application procedure will be announced on this website in due course.

Q18: Do I get the IISER of my choice?

The allotment is based of the availability, ranks in the merit list and applicant's preferences.

Q19: Can I transfer my admission from one IISER to another at any time?

No. Allotment to an IISER is final. No application/request for transfer to another IISER will be entertained.

Q21: What is the curriculum structure for BS-MS dual degree programme?

All students are trained on all disciplines of basic sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics). Subsequently, they can take up specialized subject(s). Please refer to individual IISER website for detailed curriculum structure.

Q22: What is the syllabus for the IISER Aptitude Test for the candidates applying through State and Central Boards channel?

Q23: What is the format of the Aptitude Test?

The format of the Aptitude Test is as follows

  • Multiple-choice questions in four subjects – Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics
  • 15 questions in each subject (total: 60)
  • Duration: 180 minutes
  • Score: +3 (correct response), 0 (no response), -1 (wrong response)

Q25: Where is the IISER Aptitude Test conducted?

State and Central Boards channel candidates can appear for Aptitude Test at any one of the places given on the Test Centres Page. The choice of centre where a candidate wants to appear for Aptitude Test needs to be indicated at the time of filling online application form.

Q26: I do not have Biology/Mathematics at +2 level, can I take the test ?

Yes, you can. Questions will be from Bilogy, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and the marks will be out of 180. [ i.e. 180 = (15 questions * 4 subjects * 3 marks per question) ]
